Wembley Wolves

2003 marked the fiftieth anniversary of Wembley’s first A-grade premiership. Some members of that 1953 premiership side were in the original junior side that saw the commencement of the club in 1938.

The club went on to record what was at that time the longest streak of consecutive Grand Finals up to and including 1960 – a record seven straight wins. (No outright result was determined in 1957 after drawing with Fremantle.)

Many members of the club over the years have represented their State in both senior and junior sides.

The first ever picked in a State side was Bob Ramsay, who helped WA win its first national senior carnival in 1947.Higher honours have been achieved by many in gaining Australian selection – namely Eric Brown, Bob Ramsay, Keith Maynard, David Thompson, Dennis Banyard, Tim Lorian, John Hiron, Peter Rapaic and, most recently, Nathan Rainey.

In Under 19 Australian teams John Hiron, Tim Lorian, Peter Rapaic, Nathan Rainey and Tim Forbes have represented our club with distinction.

Wembley’s first Life Member was our club’s founder, Mr Harold Clifton, appointed in 1950. Over the club’s 67-year history we have honoured 32 people with Life Membership, including one woman, Mrs E. Lauder.

Three members of our club have been further recognised with Association Life Memberships, namely Bill Brown, Cyril Allman and Bob Ramsay.

Bill has received the sport’s highest accolade in being inducted as a Fellow of Lacrosse Australia.

WHAT IS LACROSSE?

More importantly Wembley is providing immense enjoyment to many players and supporters and its current strength in membership with more teams than ever before augers well for the future.

Much effort, in particular by Kevin McRae, has seen our modcrosse program over many years help tremendously towards our player strength, and the appointment two years ago of Australian coach, John Denic, is having a big impact on the senior players’ success on the field.
